IPL 2018, Match 37 MI vs KKR Thrilling Match Highlights

MI won the game and also keep alive their hopes for playoffs in IPL 2018
Mumbai Indians demolished Kings XI Punjab to keep hopes alive for Playoffs in VIVO IPL 2018. They lost their way after a blazing start with the bat, but managed to set a target just north of 180. At various points during their chase, Kolkata Knight Riders threatened to run away with it, but they kept losing wickets at critical intervals, often to well-directed short balls.
One man made a vital difference on both fronts. Hardik Pandya made an unbeaten 35 off 20 and followed up with four overs full of smart changes of pace to finish with 2 for 19, including an 18th over that went for only six runs. It left Knight Riders needing 37 off 12, and even Dinesh Karthik, who came into this game with a strike rate of 212.50 in chases this season, couldn't pull it off.
At the start, this looked like a 200 versus 200 kind of game. Sent in, Mumbai got off to a flier, with Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis tucking into a KKR attack that was without its best pace options - Shivam Mavi's finger joined the team's long list of injured fast-bowler body parts this season, allowing Prasidh Krishna to make his IPL debut - and whose spinners didn't have too much to work with on a flat Wankhede deck.
By the time Andre Russell, himself underbowled this season to preserve his hamstrings, removed Lewis with a slower ball, Mumbai had moved to 91 in 9.2 overs.
Visibly fatigued through the last third of his innings - the physio came onto the field to attend to him - Suryakumar, who had smacked 47 off his first 28 balls, only scored 12 off his last 11 balls at the crease.
Meanwhile, Sunil Narine, who only bowled one over in the first half of Mumbai's innings, had come back into the attack, and dismissed Rohit Sharma, caught at deep midwicket. He had presumably been held back for his match-up against Rohit, who had scored only 117 off 109 T20 balls against Narine before this game, with six dismissals.
Mumbai's middle order continued to struggle, and they could have ended with significantly less than their 181 if not for Hardik. He combined some innovative shots - including a scoop over his shoulder and a one-handed six over long-off - with a couple of fortunate edged boundaries in the last over - bowled by the debutant Krishna rather than Russell or Mitchell Johnson - to give Mumbai what proved a vital run cushion.
With Sunil Narine feeling a little unwell after Mumbai's innings, KKR sent Shubman Gill out to open alongside Chris Lynn. Narine usually invites a barrage of short balls when he opens in T20, and even in his absence Mitchell McClenaghan kept bowling short, as did Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. In all, of the 37 balls Mumbai bowled in the Powerplay (including one wide), 29 were short or short of good length.
It seemed risky, at times, especially when McClenaghan banged it in with fine leg inside the circle, but it worked. Lynn swatted one straight to that fielder, and Robin Uthappa should have been out for 4 when he mistimed another short ball, off Hardik, to mid-on, only for Mayank Markande to put down a sitter.
After a Powerplay full of pace, Mumbai turned to spin and the medium-paced cutters of Ben Cutting. Uthappa and Nitish Rana went after the slower bowlers, and scored 64 from overs 7 to 12.
Uthappa went after Cutting in particular, moving around his crease and hitting him pretty much where he pleased to pick up four successive fours in the 12th over. With Cutting not getting to bat, and keeping out a specialist bowler in Mustafizur Rahman, he seemed set to end up as the selection that cost Mumbai the game.
Uthappa's fireworks, however, weren't making as much of an impact on the scoreboard as they could have, since Rana was slowing down at the other end. Rana is an impressive young batsman with a sensational square cut, and he had hit two fours with that shot as well as an uppercut six to race to 22 off 11 balls.
Thereafter, though, he began taking singles to the deep fielders rather than keep going for big hits. Having scored only 9 off his next 15 balls and watched Uthappa hole out, he took on a rising short ball from Hardik and sent it down deep square leg's throat.
Scorecard
Mumbai Indians 181 for 4 (Suryakumar 59, Lewis 43, Russell 2-12, Narine 2-35) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 168 for 6 (Uthappa 54, Karthik 36*, Hardik 2-19) by 13 runsWatch Match Highlights Here:⬇️

IPL 2018, M33: CSK vs KKR Thrilling Match Highlights

KKR win their home game courtesy of CSK's sloppy fielding
One of Kolkata Knight Riders' most valued assets is their bowling strength, particularly their spinners. Sunil Narine's mystery spin is still effective. Wristspinners Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav are widely respected. Together, they conceded 89 runs in 12 overs and took all five wickets to fall in the game's first half to limit Chennai Super Kings to 177.
In favourable chasing conditions, KKR cruised home with 14 balls to spare, on the back of Shubman Gill's maiden IPL fifty and rapid cameos from Dinesh Karthik and Narine. The result meant Sunrisers Hyderabad displaced CSK at the top of the points table.
While batting first on a small ground, deciding on a target can be a tough decision. At Eden Gardens before this game, a target was successfully defended only once in four games - KKR scored 200 to beat Delhi Daredevils by 71 runs. With short boundaries and the possibility of dew impacting spinners in the second innings, CSK may have felt compelled to aim at a similar score. That's how openers Faf du Plesssis and Shane Watson approached their innings.
Du Plessis hit four fours and a six in his 15-ball 27, often chipping lofted shots over the infield to capitalise on a fast outfield. He was bowled by Piyush Chawla, slogging across the line in an attempt to further increase the scoring rate.
Watson was more circumspect, picking his deliveries to attack. He struck 36 off 24 balls before mis-timing a pull to deep midwicket. Together, they played 40 balls - one third of the innings - to score 63 runs, putting CSK on course for a 200-plus score.
Prior to this game, Dhoni had found his fluency and form, having scored three unbeaten fifties in eight games this season. Three quick wickets and a risk of leaving the death overs bare of batting resources forced Dhoni to retract from attacking from the outset.
He scored five runs from his first nine balls. He hit 30 off his next 11 balls, including four sixes. CSK scored 56 runs from the last five overs. Dhoni scored 39 of those.
With 177 to defend, CSK needed early wickets to stall KKR's momentum. Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine are often tasked with generating that momentum. Lynn was caught at slip, via the inside edge, in the first over. CSK then had two chances to dismiss Narine.
Ravindra Jadeja, one of CSK's best fielders, dropped both chances at mid-off, off consecutive deliveries. In the second over, Narine flat-batted a length ball to Jadeja. He pouched the ball near his midriff, but the ball burst out. Off the next ball, Jadeja dropped an overhead catch. Narine went on to score a 20-ball 32, before he was eventually caught off the bowling of Jadeja.
KKR were in control of their chase right from the outset. When Rinku Singh was bowled in the 12th over, KKR needed 81 runs off 50 balls. Gill and Karthik stayed aggressive, punching drives on the up and pulling elegantly into the stands over square leg.
The intent was clear: not to leave the chase to the last over with several variables involved. Karthik's 18-ball 45 and Gill's 36-ball 57 ensured the penultimate over wasn't required either.
Scorecard
Kolkata Knight Riders 180 for 4 (Gill 57*, Karthik 45*) beat Chennai Super Kings 177 for 5 (Dhoni 43*, Watson 36, Narine 2-20) by six wicketsWatch Match Highlights Here:⬇️
IPL 2018, M:33 CSK vs KKR Match Preview

KKR will host CSK at Eden Gardens Kolkata
On song after making a superb comeback to the league, table toppers Chennai Super Kings would look to continue its winning momentum and spoil Kolkata Knight Riders’ homecoming in an IPL match, here tomorrow. Written off at the start with critics branding it’s dugout as an ‘old-age home’, CSK, on the field, never looked like a side which is making its comeback to the tournament after serving a two-year suspension.
With a vintage Mahendra Singh Dhoni in centre of the team’s batting might, CSK have started looking ominous and would look to make a firm grip of their lead atop the standings as the tournament heads to the business end. CSK are currently leading the eight-team table with 12 points from six wins out of eight games.
Both the teams are here on the back of two morale-boosting wins against Delhi Daredevils with KKR successfully chasing a modest 176 in Delhi, while CSK reigning supreme at their adopted home in Pune.
Half-centuries from Shane Watson and Dhoni blasted CSK to its third 200-plus score and then young fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and KM Asif choked Delhi’s chase to hand CSK its sixth win of the season. Dhoni himself is in the middle of the CSK’s success with his batting and captaincy instincts. Dhoni made four changes against Delhi and it showed the team’s depth.

Both teams have great match finishers which will provide great match for the cricket fans
Ngidi looked reliable and penetrative both in power play and at the death as the South African brought some venom into the pace department in absence of injured Deepak Chahar. A product of the MRF Pace Foundation, Asif impressed with his raw pace and quick arm action and took two wickets on debut, though the young Kerala pacer leaked 43 runs in three overs.
Then there is vintage Dhoni himself. Dhoni averages 71.50 with three half-centuries. His knock of 70 not out from 34 balls to hunt down RCB’s 205 still remains the talk of the town. The way he sealed the game with his signature swing over wide long on boundary brought back memories of the 2011 World Cup triumph.
With a handsome 12-7 win-loss record, the Dhoni-led side will also give some more headache to KKR. In the mid-table with six matches to go, KKR cannot afford to lose at Eden Gardens, where they play three more, in its bid for to secure a maiden playoff berth under Dinesh Karthik.
KKR’s campaign, so far, has been hugely dependent on the overseas trio of Chris Lynn, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. Lynn was the architect of KKR’s six-wicket win in Bangalore with a restrained knock of 62 not out from 52 balls after he got a reprieve on seven.
KKR would hope for a strong batting show, especially from Robin Uthappa who is in the middle of a lean patch and is yet to score a half-century. KKR also seemed to have under-utilised youngster Shubman Gill by sending him lower down the order. Batting at no. 7, the Under-19 World Cup star has scores of 3, 6, 14 not out, 37, 5 not out in what seems to be sheer waste of talent.
Having failed to defend a handsome 203 in the first leg, KKR bowlers will look for a better show this time.

1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Karn Sharma, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Shardul Thakur, 11 Lungi NgidiLast Meetings
It is the match that will be remembered as the one that pushed fans to troll India seamer Vinay Kumar, following the penultimate-ball six by Dwayne Bravo that helped Super Kings chase down a target of 203. That game also happened to be the last match played in Chennai, after which Super Kings' home base was switched to Pune.
Teams Strategy
Best chance for Sunil Narine to regain his impact with the ball. Narine picked up seven wickets in the first four matches, but then could manage just the one wicket in the next four games during which he conceded at a rate of 10.3 with an average of 144. However his numbers against the specialist batsmen in Super Kings are healthy and home conditions are likely to favour Narine.Important Stats
This IPL, Chris Lynn has been defensive against left-arm spinners: in four innings so far, out of 27 deliveries he has faced against them, he has got 25 runs at a strike rate of 92.6 with a dot ball percentage of 44.4, and has been out twice
Andre Russell can overpower all kinds of bowling. Of particular note in that list is Russell's Caribbean team-mate Dwayne Bravo. Russell has 216 runs off 102 balls he has faced from Bravo, a strike rate of 211.8 in 17 innings
Sunil Narine has had the better of Shane Watson, Super Kings' gun batsman. In 13 T20 innings he has bowled against the Australian, Narine has got Watson six times
Robin Uthappa needs 23 runs to register 4000 runs in the IPL. Uthappa also needs nine runs to register 1000 runs at Eden Gardens in the IPL
Piyush Chawla needs two wickets to register 50 wickets for KKR in the IPL. He will become the first player in IPL history to pick up 50-plus wickets for multiple teams. Chawla previously took 84 wickets for Kings XI Punjab
